Presenters

We are pleased to announce that Michelle Scott will be presenting a stage presentation at the 2011 Positive Schools Conference in Perth

Michelle Scott was appointed Western Australia’s first Commissioner for Children and Young People on 7 December 2007.

In her previous role as WA’s Public Advocate, Michelle was responsible for protecting and promoting the rights of people with decision-making disabilities.  She has also been a member of the Mental Health Review Board and Senior Member of the both the Immigration Review Tribunal and the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, after beginning her career in Social Work for community-based organisations.

As the independent Commissioner for Children and Young People, Michelle reports directly to Parliament and has a statutory responsibility to promote and enhance the wellbeing of all Western Australian children and young people.

Over the past three years, Michelle has built strong working relationships with government and non-government agencies, community organisations and the private sector to promote the best interests of children and young people and give them a voice at the highest levels of decision making.

Since taking on the role, Michelle has travelled more than 40,000km across Western Australia and personally consulted with hundreds of children and young people, their families and those who work with them to help chart the direction of her work.

The Commissioner’s areas of focus include legislative reform, public policy and service delivery that are in the best interests of children and young people, enabling and encouraging the participation of children and young people in decision making that affects them, and researching and raising awareness of issues that have a significant impact on our youngest citizens.
