Students will take the lead in this workshop and present their strategies on positive mental health and wellbeing in their schools. The workshop will include a chance to ask questions of the students and school staff mentors. We will also explore the student empowerment approach we are taking in MindMatters.
Participants will see student empowerment in action, and will walk away with ideas for implementing similar activities at their own schools.

About MindMatters

Since 2000 MindMatters has been working to deliver mental health promotion and early intervention strategies for secondary school communities. In 2013, the Australian Government Department of Health commissioned beyondblue to redevelop and roll out MindMatters the Australian Secondary Schools Student Mental Health Initiative. With MindMatters, beyondblue is working closely with education and mental health leaders to create a world-class online environment, strengthening the capacity of schools to protect and promote youth mental health and wellbeing.

MindMatters will implement an evidence-based mental health framework that will;

• explicitly enable schools, students and families to access evidence-based strategies and programs to meet specific needs

• help schools access the best existing and emerging evidence-based programs, strategies and supports offered by mental health, community, youth and education agencies

• allow schools to access MindMatters on multiple levels and as flexibly as possible across the whole school community.

The new MindMatters initiative will be broken into four components. Each component will contain stand-alone online modules to strengthen staff knowledge and skills, as well as provide the starting point for whole-school implementation of evidence based strategies and programs.

This presentation will outline the new MindMatters initiative, giving insight into the eLearning environment and the supports that will enable schools to engage and interact with the initiative into the future
