There is substantial evidence that peer interactions especially in conflict situations provide important opportunities for social cognitive and moral development (Green & Cillesen. .2008). Moreover successful resolution of disputes enhances agency and autonomy (De Vries & Zan 1994, Mullin,2007)
This paper describes the presenters’' experience of facilitating stress reduction in individuals and groups
and successful conflict resolution in schools using student teams to employ and role model Mindsight as a tool for self regulation and integrating the 'upstairs and downstairs' brain ( Siegel & Bryson (2011) to engage with and learn from
others.
It will also discuss how we literally 'lose our minds' when the downstairs brain is in charge and use case studies to show how staff can identify manage and help vulnerable students who often regress to this position.
