A story of inspiration and courage: building resilience to overcome a traumatic life changing event

Albert Lyons will talk about a life changing event that occurred early one morning in August 2006, and how he has managed to accept and cope with the changes to his life that resulted from the injuries he sustained due to this event. Albert was 18 years old when he was assaulted by three youths whilst walking home from a Saturday night out in Northbridge. The assault caused a severe traumatic brain injury leading to an initial period of four months of hospitalisation, many operations and medical conditions, followed by a year of rehabilitation and a further two months of hospitalisation due to numerous complications and set backs associated with his injury.   Throughout this trauma, Albert has managed to maintain a positive and happy persona. Although it would have been easy, in the circumstances, to give up hope and fall into a pit of unhappiness and despair. This has not happened. Albert will talk about some of the methods and techniques he has used since the assault to stay motivated and positive throughout this difficult and challenging journey.
