The Inaugural Positive Schools 2009 Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference to be held on Friday 22nd May 2009, at the University Club, University of Western Australia Main Campus Crawley.

 

Positive Schools 2009 offers principals, teachers, psychologists and other educational professionals opportunity to better understand mental health issues with a clear focus on finding solutions and achieving sustainable positive outcomes. This one day event offers an unbridled opportunity for participants to gain a positive, solution focused approach to social and psychological issues facing schools and colleges Australia wide.  

 

Thirteen internationally acclaimed speakers will offer inspirational and innovative presentations across a broad range of topics. In addition, six optional workshops will be available on a first come, first served basis throughout the day. These workshops need to be booked upon registration and payment. In this interactive session, Professor Wildy will examine strategies that leaders use to assist teachers deal with the pressures and tensions of every day work in schools of today. Participants will engage with short narrative accounts derived from interviews with principals during visits to Western Australian schools during the past 10 years, to generate discussion about the strengths and challenges of a range of work settings and issues. Promoting positive body image in schools

Body image was identified as the number one concern of both males and females in a 2007 survey of over 30,000 Australian adolescents.   Up to 80% of adolescent girls and 50% of adolescent boys report being dissatisfied with their bodies and, among primary school-aged children, 50% of girls and 30% of boys report body dissatisfaction.(Click HERE to read more)

Finding solutions with young people with alcohol and other drug issues 

Alcohol and other drug use in young people is part of a range of behaviours which make up the transition into adulthood. In many cases it is a transient phenomena but in some cases it can be associated with serious mental health issues, social dysfunction and long-term consequences. George W Burns

Clinical psychologist George Burns, author of seven books on therapeutic approaches within positive psychology, will present a workshop on the use of metaphor with kids and teens. Educating Well-Being through Stories.Stories have long held the power to enrich our lives, shape the way we perceive and interact with the world, and reveal the wonders of the human spirit.  So, too, can they play an important and potent role in education, counselling and therapy by helping young people develop the skills, values and resources to live a happy, flourishing life.

Wilson and Julie McCaskill of The Game Factory

Dr Rosie Rooney

Dr Rooney is a senior lecturer at Curtin University of technology in Western Australia and has obtained a number of large grants as well as published in the areas of childhood depression and anxiety.

She has been the principal investigator in the development and evaluation of the Aussie Optimism Positive Thinking Skills Program (AOP-PTS) aimed preventing depression and anxiety in 8-9 year old children and has received a number of grants which have enabled her to follow-up a cohort of 900 children between 2004 and 2009.

Albie Lyons

A story of inspiration and courage: building resilience to overcome a traumatic life changing event

Albert Lyons will talk about a life changing event that occurred early one morning in August 2006, and how he has managed to accept and cope with the changes to his life that resulted from the injuries he sustained due to this event. Albert was 18 years old when he was assaulted by three youths whilst walking home from a Saturday night out in Northbridge.

Bill Boylan

Bill Boylan has been in education for 25 years in the capacity of teacher, curriculum improvement officer, deputy principal and principal. Associate Professor Janet Fletcher

Janet is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology and Director of the Child Study Centre at the University of Western Australia. Janet’s work as both practitioner and academic has involved children with a variety of disabilities. (Click HERE to read more)

 
 
Dr Steve Heath

Steve is a clinical and research psychologist and also a trained teacher. She has a special interest in disorders of language and literacy and particularly phonological processing. She works clinically with primary school aged children and adults. At the UWA Child Study Centre Learning Clinic Steve works in the multi-disciplinary team with students whose specific learning disabilities interfere with their academic achievement and undermine their developing sense of well being. Associate Professor Helen Street
