Positive Teacher of the Year 2015

The Positive Teacher of The Year Awards are proudly supported by :

In 2015 we received over 750 nominations from around Australia.  As ever the selection process was challenging with so many great teachers deserving of recognition.

Queensland

Winner: Matthew Newell, Glenmore State High School

Matthew is the deputy principal at Glenmore State High School in Rockhampton. His colleagues describe him as motivated and enthusiastic. As someone who is creative in their approach to problem solving and always keen to go an extra mile to help and encourage others. 

Among his many achievements, Matthew has led the development of an individualized tracking system that ensures that all students are supported appropriately. He has actively sought evidence based wellbeing programs that benefit individual students and groups.  He has led the redevelopment of the student wellbeing program which has helped students embrace school life and move successfully to high school. 

Matt is currently leading a team to implement a positive education framework within the school. This will include a full program of activities and actions for 2015 and beyond.

Matt is highly connected to the students, parents and staff at all levels of the school and is a highly valued staff member.  Matt has really made a difference for individuals and groups within the school community.

Runner-Up: John Beaumont, Ipswich Grammar School

John is the Head of Boarding at Ipswich Grammar School in Queensland and received ten separate nominations from his students. He has made a significant impact on his students with his caring and supportive attitude helping them to settle in successfully and feel a great sense of belonging to the school. His students repeatedly describe him as someone who always makes time for his students with a smile on his face.

One student states that  “John is not just a teacher, he is a nice person!” With these words we can understand how the students see John for who he is and not simply the role he has.  And in so doing they feel safe and confident with him in their school community.

Western Australia

Winner: Lionel Cranenburgh, Roleystone Community College Board & Former Head of English at Lesmurdie Senior High School.

Lionel loves helping educators. He is an expert in his field and widely sought for his knowledge on education. He is a prolific writer and has used his skills to help hundreds of educators to gain career advancement. He is multi-talented, an innovator, and a person that helps multi-cultural people to progress their careers. He is a journalist, educator, career advisor, trainer and mediator.

Among his many achievements, Lionel was Foundation Member starting the Gifted and Talented Children's Association in WA. He is the only Australian educator to write articles for Education World, India to help Indian students and was on its National Board. His Classroom Press student magazine at Lesmurdie Senior High School enabled him to individually coach students to write and publish their work as journalists do.

Lionel is currently working as a mediator, trainer, writer, journalist and career specialist serving schools. His mentoring of the Roleystone Community College Principal, Peter Thatcher, led to an invitation to serve on its inaugural Independent Public School Board to advise the school-community.

Now 71 years old, Lionel continues to work passionately towards improving education and wellbeing in schools and colleges in Australia and around the world.

Runner-Up: Frances Fallows, Hillary’s Primary School

Frances is an engaging and caring teacher who passionately believes in helping every child to reach their full potential at school and beyond. As pastoral care coordinator for over 15 years, Frances has implemented KidsMatter, provided many PDs and introduced numerous successful programs to the school such as peer mediation, choose respect and rainbows. 

Fran works tirelessly confident in her belief that we need to support each child to be a happy, healthy individual and in so doing, we guarantee them a stronger, brighter future.

Special Mention Robin Leake, Warwick Senior High School

Always positive and loyal, Robin works tirelessly towards building and maintaining positive relationships throughout the school.  Always on hand to listen, she is loved and respected by staff and students.

Special Mention Kate Rogers, Maidens Park Primary School

Continually working outside of her usual work hours, Kate has an open door policy for staff and students.  She is known for her work promoting resiliency in the school and for being kind and considerate of others.

Victoria

Winner: Sapna Sachdeva, Malvern Central School

Sapna is the Wellbeing Committee Convenor and Year One teacher at Malvern Central School.  Sapna is unrelenting in the pursuit of her own and her colleagues' applied knowledge of all things positive in educating our young students. Her commitment and dedication to her students and the broader school cohort of students is evident in her actions and the support she provides colleagues to build their capacity to apply positive education concepts and knowledge with their students.

Sapna has been undertaking research  (teacher led research) this year in building her own knowledge and that of her colleagues  in the area of positive education. She has built a teaching resource that has been trialed across 5 home groups of year 3 / 4 students. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Further, Sapna has been instrumental through her convening role of the Well being Committee to conduct a range of professional learning sessions specific to character strengths, growth mindset and appreciative inquiry. Her work with her colleagues has resulted in a positive impact on the entire school community.

Sapna is a positive change agent for teachers and students alike. Her colleagues feel fortunate to have her in their school making such a wonderful and lasting impact on the wellbeing and learning experience of all.

Runner-Up: Rachael Moloney, Swan Hill Primary School

Rachael is the Grade One Year Level Coordinator at Swan Hill Primary School. Rachel is passionate about student wellbeing, empathetic to others, energetic and enthusiastic.  She has introduced KidsMatter and Bounce Back programs to the school in addition to being a dedicated member of the Wellbeing Improvement Program in the school.

Rachael has led PD, created and promoted whole school and whole staff activities and is a hugely respected member of the school community.

Bright, bubbly and confident. Larissa is compassionate about her work teaching challenging subjects in an engaging way.

Special Mention: Ben Hill, Kyneton Secondary College.

Consistently cheerful and positive, Ben gives his all to engage and encourage staff and students in a cohesive school community

Special Mention: Karen Hodgkins, Mt Martha Primary School

Karen has a nurturing nature and provides a safe and peaceful environment for challenging students at the school. She has led wellbeing initiatives such as KidsMatter and gives her all in class time and lunch time to help students.

Special Mention: Lisa King, Kingswood College

A caring and engaging teacher, Lisa goes out of her way to create a positive atmosphere both in the classroom and wider school community.  She is able to make everyone feel special as a unique individual.

New South Wales

Winner: Shannon Rosewood, New England Girls School, Armidale

Shannon is the head of St John’s Junior School, part of the New England Girls School in Armidale, NSW. She is described by her staff as a gentle and caring boss. Someone who brings a happy and professional attitude to the school community. Shannon models effective communication and caring and in her actions creates an amazingly uplifting ripple effect.

Shannon has supported the development of the Junior School Wellbeing Program from day one. Not only does she teach part of the school's wellbeing program but she is involved in all meetings to work on new ways to develop the program further.

In addition to working to bring MindMatters successfully to the school, Shannon has also developed many great initiatives of her own. In particular she has developed a range of initiatives to keep students happy and healthy at recess and lunchtimes when incidents can occur more often. For example, she designed and organised the implementation of a school bike track and bike riding program, a child size chess set on the playground and a special 'code club' for students at lunch

Shannon is always there to assist. She approaches everyone with a positive and happy attitude which makes all staff feel comfortable and therefore happy in the work environment. She is considered to be a fabulous role model for all.

Runner-Up: Stuart McCormack, Richard Johnson Anglican School, Oakhurst

Stuart is Director of Student Welfare 7-12 at Richard Johnson Anglican School in NSW. Stuart has been instrumental in supporting students and colleagues. He is described as engaging, interested and passionate about the lives of others. Stuart is not only admired by staff he is frequently praised by students as being ‘the’ teacher who they can really talk to and feel comfortable with. 

Stuart has stepped beyond talking about ideas and philosophy and is living out his values and passions as a positive educator. He is helping to make the lives of students better.

Special Mention: Kelvin Cowling, Seaforth Primary School

With an unprecedented 40 nominations for this award, it is clear that Kelvin is well loved by parents, students and teachers alike. As the librarian of Seaforth Primary School Kelvin has impressed students and parents with his dedication, enthusiasm and creative outlook for literature, sport and creating a positive environment. Kelvin is a well loved and highly respected member of the school community.
